Tata Africa Holdings (SA) visited COMPASS on Friday, 05 September . COMPASS is a shelter for the homeless, woman and children who are abused, recovering alcoholics as well as drug addicts. COMPASS has over the years welcomed people from across Africa irrespective of race or creed. It currently has three houses in Johannesburg where families are housed , fed, schooled and clothed in order for them to start their lives all again and be able to be re-integrated into society. COMPASS has rescued many people over the years and it has done this with very little funding and in some cases good Samaritans have come at the right time when the shelter was about to close its doors. Tata Africa started off the day by listening to the stories from survivors and took a tour of the homes in order to appreciate the living conditions of people who live in shelters. We then made our way to one of the houses where we converted one of the rooms into a boys room. Our staff members were hard at work, cleaning the room, installing curtain rails and assembling new beds for the boys. We also enjoyed a lunch with the children when they returned from school. Although being exposed to the difficult situations that people who are less fortunate made us all feel really sad, it was equally fulfilling to be able to make a difference, though small, to people's lives.
