Biodiversity conservation Tata Chemicals  |  Mithapur

One of the major reasons for biodiversity loss at global level is the rampant spread of exotic invasive weed species. There is specific focus on control of exotic weed species in United Nation's "AICHI" targets for biodiversity conservation. Mithapur region too is facing the problem of rampant spread of an exotic invasive weed called the "Prosopis juliflora". This weed flourishes at the cost of indigenous flora and seriously impacts the local ecosystems and the wildlife. The seedpods of this weed are consumed by wild herbivorous animals who aid in seed dispersal through their droppings. Employee volunteers and family members at Tata Chemicals have been maintaining a regular vigil to control the weed spread. A pre-summer drive to collect droppings of Neelgai (Indian Blue Bull) from the Mithapur wilderness was initiated as part of TVW-9. Work in this regard shall continue for another two weeks to check this invasive weed.
