Tree Idiots program

Tata Chemicals | Mithapur
The "TREE IDIOTS" program launched at Mithapur is a multi-purpose initiative for mapping the tree biodiversity and the associated avi-fauna (birds) at Mithapur. Apart from establishing a database on tree species diversity and population, this exercise will also give an understanding of the lean periods for fruiting and flowering trees. Species selection for future plantation programs will be done such that they help fill the lean period gaps and we can have fruiting and flowering cycles round the year to ensure sustenance of bird and insect biodiversity. This exercise is expected to be completed in two months' time through voluntary support from employees, family members and retired employees who are also recording nesting indices to help understand the tree species preference by birds for nesting and roosting. This is the first ever such comprehensive exercise for Mithapur being done by volunteers. Needless to mention, apart from raising conservation awareness amongst employees and Mithapurians, this will also be a first step in the direction of understanding the carbon sequestration capacity of Mithapur trees.
The program has been named "TREE IDIOTS" and the Tree Idiots (volunteers) shall take care to remove nails from tree trunks if they so happen to come across.
The purpose is to arouse reverence, respect and care for our flora and fauna. Bird identification posters, sparrow nest box and pamphlets on snakes of Mithapur are being distributed to the Mithapur community as a part of this exercise.
